The FlyFish Omarama Experience PDF Print E-mail

One of the highlights that FlyFish Omarama offers is the exhilarating jetboat trip down the Waitaki River to the many fishing places along its length of over 60 kilometres. The road from Omarama goes past the picturesque lakes of Benmore, Aviemore and Waitaki to the boat-launching site near the town of Kurow. The Waitaki River, which is fed from the lake system, has stable main channels and numerous side braids and backwaters that provide all types of fishing opportunities. The boat takes the angler to most parts of the river that are otherwise inaccessible by foot and 20 kilometres of length can be covered in a day. This experience is very popular and enjoyed by many clients.

Also in the area are the world-renowned Tekapo and Ahururi Rivers that yield high catch rates of both browns and rainbows. There are also numerous small streams that fish extremely well in the early part of the season.

The Fish

Wild rainbow and brown trout inhabit virtually all of the waters, and in the spawning season, chinook salmon run in from the sea thus giving the visiting angler a wide variety of fishing options. Water from the eastern snowfields of New Zealand's highest peaks, mountain torrents and spring-fed streams feed the many lakes and rivers in the total countryside. Stunning scenery abounds in all directions.

Many types of technique are available but dryfly and nymph fishing to sighted fish is a specialty. Stalking large browns and rainbows in shallow water and watching the fish take the fly or nymph can be very exciting. This type of fishing is considered by many to be the epitome of angling and is not to be missed. If weather conditions do not allow this style of fishing, upstream nymphing can be most successful.

Fishing Seasons

The Waitaki River is open for fishing from 1st October to 31st April.

All other rivers, small streams and lakes are open from the first full weekend in November to 30th April.

All of the major lakes, seven in number, are open all year round and winter fishing can be very rewarding in these waters.
